Shoe Shopping Checklist
The wrong shoes can cause or aggravate foot ailments. The right shoes can prevent - but correct - common foot problems. Wearing the right shoes is essential for good foot health.
Follow these tips when buying new shoes:
- Leather crafted shoes are best because leather breathes like skin and molds to your foot.
- Soles should be strong and flexible with a good gripping surface.
- Insoles should be cushioned to absorb the impact of walking.
- Shoes with arch support distribute weight over a wider area, so one small area will not have to bear most of the weight.
- High heels should not be worn for too long or for much walking. They cramp the toes and change body posture, thus making back aches more likely.
- Only you can tell if shoes fit. If they are not totally comfortable, don't buy them.
- Don't buy shoes that are just a little too tight, thinking they will stretch with wear.
- Feet spread with age. Have your feet measured every time you go to buy new shoes. Measure both feet because they are always different sizes. Always buy for the bigger foot.
- Go shoe shopping late in the afternoon when feet have had all day to swell to their largest size.
- Your feet are not the only thing determining shoe size. Shoe make and style may mean you will not always be the same size.
- Make sure the heel fits snugly and you have enough room to wiggle all of your toes.
